Senior Games

Did you play a sport in high school? Did you enjoy the thrill of competition? Perhaps you are one of those individuals that has always dreamed of competing in an athletic event, but time slipped away and you thought your opportunity had as well. Fear not, the Missouri Senior Games is coming soon! The Missouri State Senior Games is an Olympic-style sports festival for individuals age 50 and older.  In 2016, the Senior Games will be held the weekend of June 9-10-11-12 in Columbia, Missouri.

The Missouri State Senior Games is held in Columbia, the home of some of the finest venues in the state. Events are held at the University of Missouri, Columbia College, Columbia Public Schools and Columbia Parks & Recreation venues. (you need hyperlinks for each of these places- please put them in)

The Missouri State Senior Games is an Olympic-style sports festival for senior (50+ Years old) athletes. The purpose of the Missouri State Senior Games is to;

  • Provide an annual physical fitness event to promote social, competitive, athletic and recreational activities for older adults.
  • Promote and create an interest in lifetime sports, recreation, and physical exercise as a means of enhancing one’s quality of life.
  • Create an awareness of the abilities and capabilities of older citizens.
  • Foster an amateur athletic network of participants, volunteers and sports enthusiasts throughout Missouri that encourages and promotes healthier lifestyles.
  • Create private as well as public support for physical fitness and amateur athletic training.

As such, these games are an “Open” event, which means that out of state residents are eligible and encouraged to participate.

Entrants can participate in NSGA-approved sports That includes the following; Archery, Badminton, 3v3 Basketball, Bowling, Cycling, Golf, Horseshoes, Race Walk, Road Race, Shuffleboard, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, Track & Field and Volleyball.  Other sports and activities available include Darts, Shooting, Skills Contests, Soccer and Washers (what is Washers??). This is a great opportunity to gather up a group of friends for a friendly competition and some fun. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event. This year over 2000 participants will attend along with family members and friends and many volunteers will be needed. Per the website the various positions for volunteers is as follows:

 

Volunteer Activities

3on3 Basketball – Scorekeeper, timer

Basketball Skill Contests – Scorer, check-in competitors, establish order of shooting

Cycling – Course marshal, timer/recorder

 Football/Softball Skill Contests – Scorer, check-in competitors, establish order of shooting

Golf – Starter, scorecard check-in/posting, course marshal

Horseshoes – Scorer, scoreboard operator

Pickleball – Check-in, scoring, linesmen — merging with Show-Me STATE GAMES

Registration – Check-in of athletes, t-shirt distribution

Road Races – Timer, recorder, course monitor

Shuffleboard – Court referee, scorer, assign courts, record match results, update brackets

Swimming – Timer — merging with Show-Me STATE GAMES

Track and Field – Timer/Finish judge, field event assistant

Volleyball – Record scores, assign courts, update brackets

Washers – Scorer, record scores, update brackets

Miscellaneous Sports – For sports only needing 1 to 5 volunteers

  • And if you enjoy this state level of games, The National Senior Games presented by Humana is the premier event of the NSGA. To date, there have been 15 national championships in cities throughout the country. In 2017, The Games will debut in Birmingham, Alabama. Will you be there?
