Apps 50+ Edition

In The Village of Bedford Walk

We cannot ignore it. Technology has made its grand entrance and is here to stay. As frustrating as it may seem to break down and purchase a smart phone or a tablet (if you are not already a user), these devices can help improve our lives, especially those over the age of 50.

An app, according to Dictionary.com is ‘an application, typically a small, specialized program downloaded onto mobile devices’. Apps come in many forms and can often improve your quality of life. For example, the Weather app can forecast the weather anywhere in the world with just the touch of your finger.

Apps can better our lives by making certain things easier and by making us smarter. An extensive amount of knowledge and resources are available at our fingertips. We should be taking advantage of this vast amount of information!

But not all apps are creating equally. Some are meant to progress the world we live in and some are just a plain waste. Take a look at what we think apps should provide to people, particularly those over the age of 50:

  • An app must entertain, help or inform everyone, including senior citizens.  Since the mobile app market is expanding exponentially, it is important to look for apps that will enhance our lives through technology.
  • The app must be easy to read, easy to use and easy to navigate.  Some apps work better and read better on tablets. Good apps will be easy to read and use on both tablets and smart phones.
  • The app needs to have a good customer support service. What is more frustrating than poor customer service? Before downloading an app, look up reviews through the app store or by a quick Google search.

Picking out the good apps from the bad ones is not difficult. We encourage people to use more apps and to expand their knowledge. Take a moment to search for some helpful, life-improving applications. You’ll be glad you did!
