89th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

This year, you can kick-off the official start to the holiday season with the 89th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade showcasing top entertainers, performances, giant balloons and one-of-a-kind floats. The Emmy Award winning event is seen by more than 3.5 million people in New York City and 50 million people at home.

Fun facts about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The original Macy’s Christmas Parade was started in 1924 by Macy’s employees and featured animals from the Central Park Zoo.
The first inflatable balloon debuted in 1927. Felix the Cat was the first character balloon.
In 1934, a mouse named Mickey Mouse was introduced to Parade goers. Walt Disney himself collaborated with Macy’s designers to create the 4-story balloon.
The Parade won its first Emmy in 1979.
Hello Kitty stands as high as a 3 story building and as wide as 8 taxi cabs. It takes 90 handlers to help Hello Kitty down the road.

Watching the parade is just one of many traditions the residents (and employees!) at The Village of Bedford Walk enjoy sharing. We encourage residents to invite their their family, friends and neighbors to continue their long standing holiday traditions whether it be sharing everything they have to be thankful for, or laughing about a crazy holiday tradition they used to have!
